The Spectacular Ed McDaniel Memorial Balloon Glow

The Spectacular Ed McDaniel Memorial Balloon Glow is an event that takes place at the Oak Hill Property of the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA. It is a part of the Balloons Over Rockbridge festival, which is a weekend-long event that features hot air balloon flights, local bands, food and merchandise vendors, beer, children’s activities, and more. The balloon glow takes place at 9 pm on Saturday and Sunday. It is a beautiful sight to behold as dozens of hot air balloons light up the night sky.

If you’re interested in attending the event, please note that all balloon activities are weather dependent 1 Admission to the event is free, but there are certain items that are not allowed on the premises such as tents, pop-ups, large umbrellas, coolers, weapons or drones. Dogs are welcome but must be well-mannered, vaccinated and leashed.

Chesapeake Bay Balloon Festival

While this festival is not in Virginia, it is so close in neighboring Maryland so I am including it as its a short commute from lots of Virginians.  The featured attraction is more than twenty art-inspired hot air balloons. Tethered rides are an inexpensive way to experience ballooning, 50′ in the air for 3-5 minutes ($20 adults, $10 kids). Balloon fly-aways are beautifully stunning to watch as balloon drift over the countryside. Guests can ride along for $350 on a 45 minute to an hour ride (Reservations here)

The evening “balloon glow” is the ultimate photo opportunity with a backdrop of balloons lit up against the dark night sky. Saturday and Sunday morning at 6 AM the balloons fly away, often breaking through the mist lying over the field.  Note that weather has major impact on hot air balloon activities. The slightest breeze and balloons may not be able to fly, but that’s why we have so many other great things going on! Of course there are colorful hot air balloons, tethered rides, and night glows.

Wine from the Eastern Shore Triple Creek Winery. Beer, Live Bands, Food Trucks, Artists, Kids Games, Face Painting, Inflatables and more.  The Festival is designed with lots of entertainment in case weather doesn't cooperate for the balloons.  It's like an arts festival, music festival, beer and wine festival with balloons.  Proceeds help launch American Farm Foundation to connect consumers with healthy food supporting local family farms.

Ballooning requires very light winds and an absence of thermal activity to be safe and enjoyable, therefore, most balloons fly in the early morning and late evening hours to keep the balloon crew and riders safe.
