The park’s centerpiece is the majestic High Bridge, which is more than 2,400 feet long and 125 feet above the Appomattox River. It is the longest recreational bridge in Virginia and among the longest in the United States. High Bridge, a Virginia Historic Landmark, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The trail is a National Recreation Trail recognizing exemplary trails of local and regional significance, connecting people to nature, to each other, and to our shared history and culture. Wilck’s Lake is a 150-acre natural area, including a 55-acre lake, managed and owned by the Town of Farmville. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the two-mile hiking/walking trail that circumnavigates the lake and provides abundant opportunities for birding and wildlife watching. Over half of the trail is under a canopy of trees and passes through various marsh, swamp and river habitats with a observation platform overlooking the marsh. Species of birds that one might expect to see include: geese, wood ducks, mallards, black ducks, teal, coots, great blue heron, green heron, kingfisher, osprey, hooded mergansers, wild turkey, vultures, barred owl, red-winged blackbirds, cardinals, prothonotary warbler, and various other songbirds. Other wildlife includes: muskrat, beaver, otter, mink, raccoon, white-tail deer, red and gray fox, rabbit, gray squirrel, bobcat, black rat snake, northern water snake and garter snake.
The lake is stocked and managed by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. Fish species include: large mouth bass, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, carp, and gizzard shad. Wilck’s Lake is family-friendly. Facilities available to the public include a playground for children, picnic shelters and full bathroom facilities.
The Farmville Blueway Paddle Trail is a protected stream corridor maintained for recreational canoeing and kayaking. The Blueway includes portions of Wilck’s Lake, Buffalo Creek, and the Appomattox River. This four-mile water trail begins on the east end of Wilck’s Lake at the boat ramp, crosses the lake to its west side, enters Buffalo Creek, and continues down the Appomattox River to the take-out at Riverside Park. A short portage connects Wilck’s Lake to Buffalo Creek. The trail may be paddled in its entirety or in two stages – the Upper Blueway or Lower Blueway. Paddle times range from one hour to three depending on the length of the trail and water conditions.
