Athletic and picnic areas are concentrated in the upper areas of the park, and access to the lower areas is provided by a system of trails including a floating boardwalk through a freshwater tidal marsh. Visitors of all ages will fall in love with R. Garland Dodd Park in the Richmond metro area and your children will be begging to return!
My family discovered Point of Rocks during covid for the first time and quickly fell in love with how beautiful the marsh walk was and how much space there was to enjoy nature and play all day. We hope you and your family enjoy it as much as we do!

Walking trails (2.7 miles) Dodd Park offers 2.7 miles of trails providing access to several habitats, including eastern deciduous forest, the banks of the Appomattox River, and tidal freshwater marsh. The trailhead can be found at the lower/ north end of the playground. The trails through the forest offer viewing access for a variety of typical eastern birds. As the forest trails yield to the freshwaters of Ashton Creek Marsh, the trail continues as a floating boardwalk with an overlook at each end.

R. Garland Dodd at Point of Rocks Beginner Orienteering Course
This beginner orienteering course at R. Garland Dodd at Point of Rocks Park contains 12 control points which span the entire park. The course is situated in the forest, steep ravines, and the bottomland. Compared to the Rockwood and Robious courses, this one is longer and involves more elevation change. Start the course at the playground which is denoted on the map by S/F (for start and finish). Parking is available by the playground and nearby parking lots. The course can be completed any time the park is open. To try it, print the orienteering map (PDF) and cue sheet (PDF).
Historic Point of Rocks Tour
Tours are held from February to November. Two-hour walking tours are offered that focus on the military hospital located at the site and its role during the Bermuda Hundred Campaign.

History of Dodd Park
Steeped in history, Point of Rocks holds significance as a Civil War site, known for its strategic location during the Siege of Petersburg. Visitors can explore remnants of trench lines and artillery positions, gaining insights into this pivotal chapter of American history. The park's preservation efforts ensure that its historical legacy remains accessible for generations to come.
Prior to Union troops occupation of the Point of Rocks area, a Confederate signal station was located there. A 110-foot signal tower were also constructed on the land adjacent to Point of Rocks Park (Dodd Park). The signal tower was used to observe the James River and send communications to troops north of the James and south along the Appomattox. The tower was a prominent feature that is seen in the background of many photographs taken near the end of the war. Abraham Lincoln visited the tower site in 1865. In June of 1864, Butler's troops built a pontoon bridge near here that crossed the Appomattox River at Broadway Landing. That bridge gave Butler's troops the ability to move from the Bermuda Hundred peninsula and support Grant in the siege of Petersburg. This site has large parking areas and restrooms. There is also a hiking trail here that follows Union rifle pits down to Ashby's Battery, a large gun position on the Appomattox River. Dodd Park at Point of Rocks is a Chesterfield County Public Park. The area has historical significance, as the land was the southern end of the Union position during the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. The hospital originally consisted of tents set up in the orchard around the Strachan House. The tents were 50 feet long and contained enough cots and bunks to accommodate 40 or more patients. As the Bermuda Hundred Campaign gave way to the Siege of Petersburg the hospital developed into a large complex of wood buildings. The hospital was organized into divisions to distribute patients according to disease. It is estimated that over 3,000 patients would have been at Point of Rocks at any given time.
